Sketching Basho

for two alto saxophones

Sketching Basho was written in 2015.  These brief meditiations on haiku by the great Japanese poet Matsuo Basho (1644-1694), were designed as little etudes or warm-up pieces for two alto saxophones.

I

all night

autumn winds

behind the mountains

II

if I put it in my hand,

will hot tears make it vanish?

autumn frost

III

in new clothes

I feel so different, I must

be someone else

IV

dusk: quiet bells

evening fragrance rings

struck from flowers

V

spring air

woven moon

plum scent
