Tocsin

for carillon

Tocsin was completed in February of 2015.

Among life's savageries is the plundering of bells to make cannon. Music, which is praiseworthy, is sacrificed to war, which is damnable. I imagined the bells themselves warning each other.

The (mis)quoted fragments of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck's "De Profundus" are solely my responsibility.

Out of the depths I cry to you Lord.

Hear my voice. Incline your ear to my supplication.

The sadness of these bells waiting in Hamburg to be taken by the Germans to be melted, is reduced by the fact that this photo was taken after the German surrender. These particular bells are safe, and awaiting restitution.
